On January 15, 1940,
Adolf was issued a Non-Quota-Quota Immigration Visa No. 3563 by the American
Consulate in London England (above card was issued to Adolf at that time).
Information from the Certificate
of Identity (have the original) dated March 26, 1940. Lists Adolf's occupation
in Vienna, Austria as that of Druggist. Document was created in the Immigration
Branch of Home Office in London, England. Adolph and his sister Rose were
hidden under a bed in Friend's home when the Nazi's did a house to house search
of Jewish homes. His parents were taken and all the family possessions taken.
Friends helped Adolf and Rose escape to London England. (Through the Jewish
Community Council, he was able to find out that it was possible for him to
go to England as a trans-migrant to await his turn on the Quota List for emigration
to the United States. In England, Adolph was placed in the Kitchener Camp,
was loosely confined, and not permitted to work on the outside.) A Jewish
organization in England helped Adolph come to America on April 5, 1940 (have
the original) Volendam Twin Screw Turbine Steamer, from Rotterdam to New York
Via Southampton. A family in Southampton provided them lodging and assistance.
Rose decided to stay with the family in Southampton. Only Adolph made the
voyage to New York boarding in Southampton as a Third Class lodging. Arrival
date in New York was April 17, 1940. A family in Chicago sponsored Adolph
and provided him with a place to live and a job.
