MOTHERHOOD: 1986

This piece is a composite piece of numerous varieties of exotic woods laminated together, then shaped into the basic goddess form. The "Head" is a separate piece and rests on the top of the body. The form is rounded on the bottom slightly and turns with ease when motivated and the "head" turns freely as the body turns. I asked a mother why she thought I called this piece "MotherHood". She responded that "you have to have a hole in your head to be a mother". This could apply, but is not my meaning. The "baby" form optically looks to be the same size as the opening in the"head". (in actuality it is not). However, my intent in this piece is to reflect MY PERSONAL view of motherhood, in that you must give up the "YOU" when you become a mother and become the "WE" and your focus becomes the child.

SELF PORTRAIT IN STONE 1986

Hand carved in stone - they stand together as a grouped set or alone. The "body" can be viewed from all sides as it easily turns on the laminated wood base. The side showing is the true body shape and if turned around, the view is of the "perfect" form or the way my mind views my body.

The "head" is my self portrait mounted on a laminated cherry wood base. The head turns easily and is on the higher base so that when together with the "body", the "appearance" is that they are a complete 3/4 body torso. Self Portrait in Stone symbolizes that many times, the head and body are not in cinque but the appearance is that they are.

CHAIRPERSON 1986

For this piece, I took the function of the Junior Chair on the right and made it into it's form - to hold a child. All pieces of the chair except the solid part of the seat are used. I then molded a burlap form to add a face to give it character. The chairperson is female and has very little movement symbolizing the need for the "female" to "attend" the "child". The child form, on the other hand, has much movement available and twists and turns and has fallen out on numerous occassions, but is quickly restored with no damage, very much like life.
