FR. JOHN MARTENS

Rev. Fr. John Martens C.M.F., 58, pastor of Sacred Heart church in Prescott, AZ., died suddenly of a stroke at Yavapal Regional Center Hospital in Prescott on Friday Sept. 1. He was a native of Pound WI.

Father John "Bob" Martens was a 1955 graduate of Coleman High School. He attended UW-Oshkosh and served in the U.S. Air Force. He was ordained to the priesthood on Dec. 17, 1970 at San Gabriel Mission in Los Angeles, Calif. He belonged to the Order of the Claretian Missionaries and served the order in parish work, as vocation director, provincial treasurer, cursillo director and served as the provincial of the order the past six years. He had just accepted the pastoral position at Prescott a short time ago.

Survivors include brothers, Jim and Greg and sisters, Betty and Sally.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles (Katie) Martens of Pound.

Burial was at San Gabriel mission in Los Angeles where services were held Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 10 a.m. A memorial service will be held at St. Francis & Wenceslaus church in Coleman at a date to be announced.
